Beef Bourguignon

Two large onions cooked to melting
750g stewing beef
2 rashers smoked bacon
200g chesnut mushrooms
1 stick celery
1 lge carrot
1 tsp fresh thyme leaves or 1 tsp dried thyme
1 tsp fresh rosemary leaves or 1 tsp dried rosemary.
4 cloves garlic
Minimum 250 ml red wine
1 tbsp tomato puree
1 beef stock cube in 250ml hot water
1tsp sugar
1tsp salt
