14th June 2025
Why is it so difficult to choose fabric? We recommend to Choose Fabric By Colour .
Within our Colour Groups, fabrics are in price order and so you can view just the fabrics within your price range.
If you see a fabric of interest - click on it and there’s a couple of website features you should not miss.
1. Roomshot Ideas.
Click on Roomshot Ideas to see the other fabrics in the Collection. There’s fabric combinations and Roomshot Images to inspire.
2. ' More Details' - the facts.
Click on 'More Details' to get more information on a fabric: weight, durability, content, suitability and Sustainability. See below.
...........
Fabric Weight
Depends on density of weave and composition of the fabric. Finer weight does not always equate to a softer drape.
Weight is measured in grams per sq metre - gsm.
Very light - up to 135gsm
Light - 135g to 200gsm
Medium - 200g to 270gsm
Medium - Heavy 270g to 350gsm
Heavy - 350g to 400gsm
Very Heavy - over 400gsm
.........
Fabric Durability
Martindale Rub Test measures the durability of a fabric and therefore determines its suitability for upholstery.
Up to 10,000 - decorative only
10 to 20,000 - light domestic for occasional furniture
20 to 25,000 - general domestic
25 to 30,000 - heavy domestic
30 to 40,000 - commercial use
Over 40,000 - ultra hard wearing

Fabric Content
There are three basic fabric types:
Natural Fibres includes cotton, linen, hemp, jute, bamboo.
Animal Based Fibres includes silk, wool and hair.
Synthetic Fibres such as polyester, which can take many forms. Price and durability is a benefit of polyester.
Viscose is a slight anomaly:
1. Semi synthetic fabric made from wood pulp. Blends with natural and synthetic fabrics.
2. Light weight and lustrous with a soft drape and handle. It’s luxurious without high cost and more delicate than polyester
..........
Sustainability
Natural : a Sustainable natural fabric is Sustainably Sourced whereby the impact on the environment is kept to a minimum. Natural fabrics are Biodegradable.
Animal : Animal Fibres are by nature Sustainable and Biodegradable. Wool is also by nature inherently Fire Retardant, with no synthetic treatment required.
Synthetic : a Sustainable polyester fabric is made from Recycled Plastic.
