What is Wool Melton?

24th June 2023
Melton Wool is woven in twill form giving it a felt like smooth finish. Originating in Melton this fabric is regarded as the toughest, most durable and warmest of woollen fabrics.

Thick and dense, windproof and weatherproof, it is highly sought after for outdoor apparel, blankets and also upholstery and curtains.

Pure New Wool Melton is available in plain and melange - which is flecked and gorgeous!

Melton can be woven with other yarns but of course the best quality is the 100% Pure New Wool.

It’s inherently Fire Retardant for upholstery and as curtains, Melton offers inherent thermal qualities and a tactile, homely ‘cocooning’ result. Although thick and heavy, it drapes for curtains and is famed for it’s acoustic absorption, perfect for bedrooms, street facing windows and rooms with hard flooring.

Authentic Melton is for the connoisseur and costly but can be sourced inexpensively in the Peter Lees Roll Ends or Wool and Faux Wool section, with roll ends varying from 4.0m to 15.0m and very affordable. Some of the rolls work out at or under £10.00m.

With it’s thermal and fire retardant qualities, and sheer elegance, Wool has been used through the ages in apparel: The Armed Forces, the Fire Service, the Royal Guard and of course by some of the most expensive clothing brands in the world.

With it's Fire Retardant qualities, Wool furnishing fabric has notable current use in UK institutions such as the House of Lords and at Windsor Castle.
